3 Tips to Overcome Networking Anxiety

If you're anything like most people, the thought of networking can make you feel awkward and uncomfortable. But don't worry, you're not alone! Networking is a skill that takes practice to master, and even the most seasoned professionals can feel anxious about it. The good news is there are some simple tips and tricks you can use to make networking easier and more effective.

Tip #1 - Perfect your elevator pitch

This is a short, 30-second or less summary of who you are and what you do. It's the most common question asked at networking events, so having a clear and concise response will help you to feel more confident and relaxed. Without a good elevator pitch, you'll be inviting nerves and anxiety to fill the space, which will limit your ability to carry on a meaningful conversation.

Tip #2 - Set your intention

You may have a clear goal in mind before you go to a networking event. Maybe you want to meet people who can help you with your career, or maybe you're looking to gain additional facetime with a potential new client. Whatever your goal, don't make it obvious to others. Instead, approach conversations with genuine interest and a desire to learn. This will make you more approachable and help you to build authentic connections with others. Remember, you can still accomplish the goal you set before the event, but you can do so without coming across as disingenuous.

Tip #3 - Get out of your head

We're often our own worst critics, worrying about how we'll come across to others and whether we'll completely embarrass ourselves. These self-doubting thoughts are normal and you can absolutely overcome them with practice. Challenge yourself to take a risk without consequence and talk to at least five new people at each networking event. The more you do it, the easier it will become.

Remember, networking is a skill that can be learned and developed. By perfecting your elevator pitch, setting clear intentions, and getting out of your head, you can make networking a more comfortable and enjoyable experience. So don't be afraid to put yourself out there and start building those valuable connections today!
